The children at the Khadavali-based Bal Ashram were treated with electric shocks, claim Kalyan Taluka police, who are investigating the matter of 29 children being mentally and physically abused at the shelter home.
Speaking to mid-day, Suresh Kadam, senior inspector, Kalyan Taluka police, said, “We are trying to talk to the children about the incident. We have received information that the staff used to give them electric shocks.”
“All these children have been physically harmed. We will gather all the evidence and make the charge sheet watertight so that the accused could get maximum punishment,” said Kadam. The police are in the process of filing a charge sheet and will appeal to the court that the matter be heard on a fast-track basis.
The police had previously arrested the trustee, his wife, his son, a teacher, and a staffer in this matter. All five have been booked under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and POCSO Act. The matter came to light when the Kalyan Taluka police received information about the harassment at a Khadavli-based ashram.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the children were physically abused if they did not behave properly. “For instance, if there were guests at the ashram and the children did not behave appropriately, the staff used to beat them, and this had been going on for over a year,” said another officer.
“The children are in a deep shock, and we are trying to speak with them without hampering their mental state,” added the officer. After the children were rescued from the Bal Ashram, they were taken to the Ulhasnagar Central Hospital, where they underwent checkups for mental and physical abuse, said police, adding that the reports are awaited.
