Ananya on believing in her instincts: ‘The pressure doesn’t paralyse me anymore'

At a time when most films disappear from theatres within a week, Kesari Chapter 2 has been enjoying a steady run for almost three weeks. When we get on a call with Ananya Panday, she attributes it to the powerful story that is at the centre of Karan Singh Tyagi’s directorial venture. “I had studied about the Jallianwala Bagh [massacre] in school, as did everyone. But I didn’t know the extent of the details I learned while being a part of this film. I wanted to help tell this chapter of history,” she says of the period drama that offers a fictionalised version of C Sankaran Nair’s legal battle against the British Empire after the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In the Akshay Kumar and R Madhavan-starrer, Panday plays Dilreet Gill, a young lawyer who becomes the protagonist’s aide. Dilreet and she may be a century apart, but the actor says they have a trait in common — steely resolve. “I could connect with Dilreet’s strong resolve. I have a lot of fire in me, but it may not be evident. Dilreet was the same. She had a quiet resolve. She was emotionally charged, but she didn’t shout to prove her point,” she assesses. (From left) Ananya Panday and Akshay Kumar in the film Kesari Chapter 2 has reportedly earned over Rs 80 crore in the domestic market. That’s an encouraging figure when most movies are tanking at the box office. As much as collections matter, Panday notes that in such a movie, the money is a by-product. “Some films are made to generate box-office value; others, because you want to tell a story to people. My priority is the audience’s reaction. [That said], it’s also a business, and you need films to do well. It directly correlates to the number of people who have seen your film. So, we can start looking at it less as ‘money’ and more as the ‘love of the audience’.” It has been a journey of growth for the actor, who debuted with Student of the Year 2 (2019). In the past three years, she has silenced her detractors with her mature performances. What brought on the shift? Gehraiyaan (2022), she says. “With the film, I fell in love with the process of acting. Now, I trust my instincts fully. Earlier, I’d always worry: What are people on set thinking? What will the audience think? I was so caught up in the final product that I wasn’t present in the moment. But working on CTRL and Call Me Bae [2024] changed that. I no longer feel scared on set. The pressure is there, but it doesn’t paralyse me anymore.”

He yearns for the golden era of Indian cinema, where great directors and writers collaborated to create timeless music. With a hunger for meaningful music, Malik is ready to create something new, driven by his passion for music as he believes, “The audience loves it, they are ready for that kind of music to come back.” Love in Mussoorie Avinash Tiwary, Aditi Rao Hydari and Imtiaz Ali Imtiaz Ali’s Netflix series O Saathi Re, starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Avinash Tiwary, is nearing completion with the final shooting schedule set to begin in Mussoorie soon. Kaala Paani star Sukant Goel's Kaisi Ye Paheli to screen at New York Indian Film

Actor Sukant Goel, who led the acclaimed 2023 Netflix survival thriller series Kaala Paani, is gearing up for the world premiere of his next, Kaisi Ye Paheli, at the upcoming New York Indian Film Festival, in June. The murder mystery, which marks the feature debut of writer-director Ananyabrata Chakravorty, will be screened on June 21. The film also stars veteran actors Sadhana Singh and Rajit Kapur, and  Chittaranjan Giri, of Farzi fame. Produced by Take Pictures founded by Chakravorty and Nishu Dikshit, Kaisi Ye Paheli is a dark comedy-murder mystery about a lonely mother’s endless pursuit to bond with her disrespectful son, set in a small town in the hills of Northeast India.  While Singh plays the mother, Goel will be seen in the role of the son. Kapur plays a Bengali detective, 28 years after his iconic turn in the TV series Byomkesh Bakshi.  Chakravorty, who has also dabbled in acting with projects like Ram Madhvani’s The Waking of a Nation and Varun Grover-directed All India Rank, said the film is an attempt to explore the desires of a person within the role of a mother. "For a film that wasn't tailored for festivals, being recognised by a prestigious one like NYIFF is a huge validation of our efforts. Through this film, I have tried to observe a mother more as a human being with basic, universal desires like love, care and respect, especially from the child to whom she gave something as precious as life itself," he said in a statement. It has been selected in the competition Section and nominated for best Screenplay and best debut film at the festival.

Karan Johar and Aryan Khan

Karan Johar reveals Aryan Khan works 20 hours a day

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who considers actor Shah Rukh Khan a brother and has seen his children grow up in front of him, recently opened up about their upcoming projects. While Suhana Khan made her acting debut with the Netflix film The Archies, she is now looking forward to her big-screen splash with The King, co-starring her superstar father. Meanwhile, Khan’s elder son Aryan Khan is set to make his directorial debut with Ba**ds of Bollywood*. Karan Johar on Suhana Khan's big screen debut In an interview with Raj Shamani, Karan Johar spoke about Shah Rukh Khan’s kids and what people can expect from their upcoming ventures. There is already a lot of buzz around The King, which will mark Suhana’s big-screen debut. “When people see her with her father in The King… They’ll see her on a large scale, and they’ll feel that she is a tremendous talent. She’s going to do phenomenally well. I’m not just saying this because she’s like my daughter—I’m saying this because I believe there is a massive, solid artist in Suhana Khan,” Johar shared. The film will be directed by Siddharth Anand who also directed Pathaan and War. The film boasts of actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone,  Karan Johar on Aryan Khan’s debut show While Johar did not reveal many details about Aryan’s first show, he said it is definitely something to watch out for. “I don’t want to say anything about his Netflix show because he’ll get very angry, but all I’ll say is this: watch out. If there is a King, there will be a Prince. I can say this with confidence because I’ve seen the show. He has an individualistic voice as a director.” Karan further added that Aryan has a “rare personality type” and is nothing like what one might expect from SRK’s son. “He works hard—he works 20 hours a day,” Johar said. The show was officially announced this year at the Netflix 2025 announcement slate. The announcement was made by Shah Rukh Khan himself with a fun teaser video.   According to the synopsis shared by Netflix, the series revolves around an ambitious outsider and his friends as they navigate the larger-than-life yet uncertain world of Bollywood. The series blends self-aware humor with a high-stakes narrative — and promises a host of unforgettable cameos, blockbuster thrills, and an adventurous ride into the world of Indian cinema.

Karan Johar

Karan Johar reacts to accusations of destroying careers

Filmmaker Karan Johar is one of the most popular and influential men of the film industry. He is the owner of Dharma Productions which has made films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Name Is Khan, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. Recently, the filmmaker spoke about people blaming him for destroying careers and only launching industry members while totally ignoring his contribution to the industry. Karan on career-destroyer tag In a conversation with Raj Shamani, Karan Johar addressed the "career destroyer" tag. He said, "People say iske iska career destroy kiya. Maine kisi ka kuch nahi kiya. Maine bas aapna kaam kiya (People say that I have destroyed careers of many. I have not done anything like that. I just did my job). This is a belief. Negativity travels, positivity doesn’t. Fashion sa hogaya hai burai karne ka (It has become a trend to badmouth people). Love me, hate me, but don't be indifferent to me. You talk so much about it, and that means I matter”. Have launched almost 50 actors: Karan Johar In the interview, Karan also said that people today praise Adarsh Gourav for his talent but never mention that his first film was My Name Is Khan directed by him. “I have worked with all actors. I can share details of actors and other talent who did their first film with us, who were complete outsiders. They started their career with us. I encouraged them to pursue their passion, and they are flourishing today. I never get credit for this". "Why aren’t people talking about Lakshya Lalwani or Raghav Juyal, who are saying Kill turned around things for them? Why aren't you crediting me for that? If I launch one actor who will be an outsider, no one will talk about that. But they will be covering and mention the so-called ‘nepo kids’. I have a whole list.. I have launched 25 directors and almost 50 actors... But why should I give the list to someone? If I have launched 20 outsider directors, they’re meant to be the captains of the ship, then why are you only focusing on the stars. An actor isn’t the sole component behind the success of a film. If I say that a film has worked only because of the star, then I am diminishing the work of the 100 people who’ve worked on the film," he added.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika skipped a director’s meeting for her baby— his reaction surprised her

Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh welcomed their baby girl in September 2024. They have successfully managed to keep their little one away from the limelight and the prying eyes of the paparazzi. The power couple does not intend to expose their bundle of joy to the public or reveal many details about her. Deepika Padukone on motherhood and work-life balance However, in a recent interview with Marie Claire, Deepika Padukone opened up about motherhood and how her daughter Dua has changed her life for the better.“I wouldn't say I'm lost,” she said when asked how she’s handling the transition. “But I wouldn't say I've found [my new identity] either. I feel like I'm navigating it.” Deepika admitted she doesn't know if her life will ever go back to the way it was before the birth of her daughter — especially her professional life, where she had mastered multitasking across her many roles. “I don't know if [work] will be what it used to be before I had a baby, and I don't even know if I want it to be that way… Is [this] my new routine and schedule?” she said, posing the question almost to herself. She also recalled a particularly telling incident when she declined a meeting with a director because she wanted to be home with Dua. “He turned around and said, ‘Oh, looks like she's taking motherhood very seriously,’” she recounted, fixing her face into a quizzical expression. “I don't know if that was a compliment or a jab. What does that mean — taking motherhood seriously? Yeah!” On the guilt aspect Despite the privilege she enjoys as one of the most influential persons of the world and having all the help she needs with her baby, the actress is still navigating and understanding this new role.  “I do have to tell myself that your life doesn't end the minute you have a child, and that you do need to get back to your life, or at least a part of your life before you had a baby… But every moment where I'm not able to be with her, there is guilt.” Ranveer Singh on Deepika turning a mother “This is the best version of Deepika I have ever known,” new father Ranveer Singh said in the same interview. “As it is often said, ‘the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.’ That holds true in the case of Deepika as a mother. She is completely present. Absolutely immersed. Extremely attentive, sensitive, caring, and beautifully gentle.”

Celebrities such as Ajay Devgn, Chiranjeevi Konidela, Akshay Kumar, Sonu Sood, Anupam Kher, and Vidya Balan were among the many who expressed heartfelt tributes and support for the operation. About Operation Sindoor The operation, which was greenlit following a high-level security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29, included strikes on key strongholds of banned terror outfits. As per PTI, these included Jaish-e-Mohammad’s base in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s sprawling markaz in Muridke, located near Lahore. Additional targets in PoK included Kotli and Muzaffarabad, regions known to host camps and training grounds for both LeT and JeM. The Indian Ministry of Defence, in a statement issued at 1:44 am IST, confirmed the launch of Operation Sindoor, stating: “A little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor,’ hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.” The strikes, the ministry noted, were “focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature,” and did not target any Pakistani military facilities. “India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and method of execution,” the official statement said. All nine targets were successfully hit, and the operation was being monitored closely by Prime Minister Modi. The name ‘Sindoor’ symbolically references the red vermilion worn by married Hindu women — a poignant tribute given that several women lost their husbands in the Pahalgam attack, including an Indian Navy officer.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's exclusive interview for Mother's Day 2025 Pic/Instagram

Mother’s Day Exclusive | Suchitra Krishnamoorthi on therapy postpartum

Actor-singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi resumes work with her podcast, The Music Stories, a one-stop destination highlighting forgotten musicians, unsung harmonies, gharanas steeped in tradition, and the science of sound itself. Beyond her work, Suchitra is a loving mother to Kaveri Kapur, who stepped into showbiz with the 2025 romantic comedy Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story. With Mother’s Day 2025 around the corner, Suchitra gets candid about her journey to motherhood, dealing with postpartum, the effect of separation from Shekhar Kapur, and more.  Suchitra Krishnamoorthi on a difficult postpartum  Recalling the day she found out she’d be a mother, Suchitra remembers that it all started with her incessant craving for cheese. The nausea kicked in, and the confirmed pregnancy took her by surprise. However, the postpartum period was severe. She explains, “I was living alone in London, I had no family around me, and my body and my mind reacted very, extremely. I would have crying bouts. I would have very deep pits that my mind would fall into. I was not able to come out of it for a long time, and I couldn't understand what was going on. I had to take therapy.”           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Suchitra Krishnamoorthi (@suchitrapublic) She added that it was “quite bad” and had to take medication for a while. “This is something many women experience and are too embarrassed to reach for help or even admit that it's happening to them. They're told, ‘What nonsense, put your child first, just ignore how you're feeling,’ but if you're not feeling good, you cannot be a good mother. So I feel it's very important to get the right help at the right time,” maintained Suchitra.  Suchitra on her separation from filmmaker Shekhar Kapur  Suchitra married filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in 1999 but divorced in 2007. When asked if it was challenging as a parent, she agreed that it was in terms of emotionally, financially, and socially, but she dealt with it one day at a time. “There is no formula. You have to take it as it comes and keep your mind open and fluid to do whatever it takes to make things work,” she says.  Is Suchitra a tiger mom when it comes to daughter Kaveri?  Suchitra’s daughter Kaveri decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and embraced acting. Did the '90s star feel hesitant about it? She states, “Not at all.” Does she consider herself to be a tiger mom - someone who is very much invested in their child’s career and life choices? Suchitra says that although she wouldn’t be as involved on the work front, she indeed cares about Kaveri’s well-being. “I'm interested that she be well, she be looked after, and she enjoy herself, and I will do everything to facilitate that. Am I going to dictate what she has to do? No way. And she's too much of an artist to allow that kind of interference from me or her father (Shekhar Kapur). And we respect the artistic journey too much to even impose on her. I want her to feel protected and safe, and that's my job, and I'll do it fiercely.”
