TEDx Talk: Dr. Gaurav Kant Sharma Busts the Sports Injury Myth -Why Tennis Elbow Isn't Just for Athletes

Dr. Gaurav Kant Sharma

At a recent TEDx event hosted by a school in Kanpur, Dr. Gaurav Kant Sharma, one of India’s pioneering musculoskeletal and sports radiologists, challenged a deeply ingrained myth: that sports injuries only happen to athletes.

In his talk, titled “Understanding Tennis Elbow: Not Just a Sportsperson’s Injury,” Dr. Sharma invited the audience to rethink what we call “sports injuries.” With gripping stories from his clinical practice at the Jaipur Institute of Pain and Sports Injuries (JIPSI), he illustrated a striking truth that conditions like tennis elbow affect far more than tennis players.

“A 13-year-old tournament player and a 33-year-old homemaker both walk in with the same pain. One swings a racquet. The other kneads dough and lifts buckets. The common culprit? Repetitive stress without recovery,” Dr. Sharma said. “Pain isn’t the enemy. It’s your body’s way of warning you.”

Redefining the Injury Narrative

Dr. Sharma’s core message was about redefining overuse injuries like tennis elbow not as athletic problems, but as lifestyle injuries affecting children, adults, and the elderly alike.

Through the stories of young athlete Saanth and rural homemaker Savitri, he highlighted how drastically different routines can lead to the same problem: chronic elbow and forearm pain caused by microtrauma to tendons. His message? Load matters more than the activity itself. And rest, variation, and recovery matter even more.

He also voiced concern about children being pushed too hard in competitive sports from a young age. “Burnout doesn’t wait till you’re 30 anymore,” he warned. “The best way to protect growing bodies is to let them move diversely, not obsessively.”

From the Stage to the Clinic: What JIPSI Stands For

As founder of JIPSI, India’s first dedicated musculoskeletal and sports radiology institute, Dr. Sharma brings together advanced diagnostics and precision-guided interventions under one roof.

Since its launch in March 2021, JIPSI has become a national referral centre for non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal pain from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and bone marrow concentrate injections to ultrasound-guided procedures that deliver millimetre-level accuracy.

“Our approach is simple,” Dr. Sharma said. “Diagnose early. Intervene precisely. Avoid surgery when possible. And get people back to doing what they love, whether it’s cricket or carrying their child.”

Precision Meets Regeneration

Blending real-time imaging with regenerative medicine, Dr. Sharma has helped countless patients recover from injuries that would otherwise linger or lead to surgery. His ultrasound-guided treatment for frozen shoulder, published internationally, is one of many examples where precision radiology has changed outcomes overnight.

At JIPSI, a team of radiologists, pain physicians, and physiotherapists work together to tackle complex joint, tendon, and nerve issues not just in athletes, but also in students, office workers, homemakers, and retirees.

Pain Is a Message. Are You Listening?

The talk ended on a powerful note. Dr. Sharma urged the audience to take even “small” pains seriously, especially those that last more than a few days.

“You don’t have to be an athlete to suffer a sports injury. And you definitely don’t need to wait for it to get worse before seeking help,” he said. “The earlier we listen to the body, the faster we can get back to living fully.”

From TEDx to a broader movement, Dr. Gaurav Kant Sharma’s message is clear: it’s time to stop ignoring pain, stop normalizing overuse, and start empowering people, children, parents, homemakers, and professionals with real knowledge about musculoskeletal health.
