Shreyas Iyer's captaincy came into the limelight when he was appointed the skipper of Delhi Capitals (DC) in place of Gautam Gambhir in the middle of the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Leading the franchise in the cash-rich league, Iyer managed to help them reach the playoffs of the 2019 and 2020 editions. In 2019, Delhi concluded its group stage phase with nine wins and five defeats in 14 matches. The side was placed in the third position on the points table
Sealing the qualification berth, Shreyas Iyer-led DC defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by two wickets in the first match of the qualifier two. The side then fell short of clinching victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the semi-finals of the IPL 2019
In the following year (2020), DC concluded the group stage with eight victories and six losses to its name. Making their way to the playoffs, the side suffered a defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) by 57 runs in qualifier one. Later, they registered a win against Hyderabad by 17 runs, which in return helped them seal the final spot against MI
The year 2019 was the first time ever for Delhi to make it to the finals of the cash-rich league. Skipper Iyer played an unbeaten knock of 65 runs. However, his 50-ball knock went in vain as the side fell short by five wickets of laying their hands on the elusive trophy
Iyer then represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024. The Knights finished at the top of the table with nine wins and three losses in the group stage. In the first qualifier, KKR came victorious by eight wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Later, they faced the same rival, Hyderabad and defeated them by eight wickets to win the IPL 2024 title
In the ongoing IPL 2025, representing Punjab Kings (PBKS), Shreyas Iyer has done wonders for the franchise. So far, completing 11 matches, Punjab has secured victories in seven matches and is placed in second place on the points table. Iyer, the right-hander, has garnered 405 runs in 11 matches. Currently, he is the ninth leading run scorer in the ongoing cash-rich league
