India's senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami received a death threat via email, prompting swift action from local authorities. The incident came to light after Shami's brother, Haseeb, reported the threat to the police on Monday.
"Mohammed Shami's brother Haseeb has informed us that the cricketer has received a death threat via email. The sender had demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore. A case has been registered at the Amroha Police Station, and we are trying to trace the email sender," said Amroha Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar, speaking to PTI.

According to Haseeb, the threatening email was received on May 4. The police have since begun a detailed investigation into the matter and are actively attempting to identify the individual behind the message.
Shami is currently part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The alarming incident has raised concerns regarding the safety and well-being of the prominent pacer, who has been a vital figure in Indian cricket over the past decade.
The 33-year-old bowler recently made his return to the Indian national team during the Champions Trophy after a prolonged absence due to surgery following the 2023 World Cup. Despite his time away, Shami made a strong comeback, emerging as India's joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with nine scalps in five appearances.
At the IPL 2025 auction, Shami was picked up by SRH in hopes of strengthening their bowling attack. However, his form this season has been below par, with only six wickets from nine matches at an average of 56.17. Despite the lukewarm stats, Shami has maintained a positive outlook.
Earlier, former cricketer and current Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir had also received a death threat from a 21-year-old engineering student, who is reportedly struggling with mental health issues. The accused, identified as Jigneshsinh Parmar from Gujarat, was traced and apprehended following an investigation.
