The IPL 2025 was on Friday officially suspended for one week due to intensifying cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision was made by the IPL Governing Council after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including franchise representatives, broadcasters, sponsors, and fans.
Several franchises had voiced concerns reflecting the sentiments of their players, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to act decisively. While the Board expressed full confidence in the capability and readiness of the Indian armed forces, it deemed it wise to prioritise the collective well-being of everyone associated with the league.
"Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course," said Devajit Saikia, honorary secretary of the BCCI. He further emphasised in the statement: "While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity and security of our country."
One of the immediate casualties of the suspension was the much-anticipated clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which was to take place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday. Addressing concerns of ticket-holding fans, LSG confirmed via an Instagram post that refunds would be issued. Although specifics of the refund process have yet to be detailed, it is expected that ticket costs will be reimbursed to the original method of payment, as per standard protocols.

The suspension followed an abandoned IPL match on Thursday in Dharamsala, located less than 200 kilometers from Jammu, where explosions had been reported earlier that day. As tensions escalated, Indian authorities reported repelling a series of overnight drone and artillery attacks from Pakistan, while Pakistani officials claimed additional civilian casualties on their side.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's own T20 league has been forced to relocate its remaining fixtures to the United Arab Emirates due to mounting concerns over player safety.
Thursday's IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abruptly halted after 10.1 overs, initially attributed to a floodlight malfunction. The game was subsequently called off, the stadium quickly evacuated, and players escorted out in team buses. Media outlets reported that IPL chairman Arun Dhumal was seen gesturing to spectators to vacate the venue.
