Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday arrived in Jeddah for a two-day visit on the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This is his third visit to the country and the first one to the historic city of Jeddah.

"This visit will strengthen the friendship between India and Saudi Arabia. Eager to take part in the various programmes," Modi said. Modi and the Crown Prince will co-chair the second meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, established during Modi's 2019 visit.

Saudi jets escort Modi

In a special gesture, Modi's aircraft was escorted by F-15 jets of Saudi Arabia when his special flight entered the airspace of the Gulf nation on Tuesday. The gesture is being seen as deepening of defence cooperation between the two countries.

‘Saare Jahan Se Achha'

The Indian diaspora gathered at a hotel in Jeddah and sang ‘Saare Jahan Se Achha' as they waited for Modi's arrival. Many thanked the Saudi leadership for inviting him over.

Six pacts to be inked

India and Saudi Arabia were set to sign at least six memoranda of understanding on Tuesday, with talks ongoing till late Monday to finalise a few more agreements. The two sides are expected to sign agreements for space, energy, health, science and scientific research, culture and advanced technology.

Hajj quota discussions

Highly placed sources said that Modi will also discuss issues relating to Hajj including the quota for Indian pilgrims during his meeting with Crown Prince on Tuesday evening.
