PM Modi arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday night ahead of the inauguration ceremony. He was transported by helicopter to the port and visited its operations centre and deck.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed PM Modi on his arrival in Thiruvananthapuram, his parliamentary constituency. Tharoor took to social media to share his excitement about receiving the Prime Minister and commissioning the port.
The Vizhinjam seaport project is an ambitious initiative by the Kerala Government. Developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, the project follows a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) basis.
Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited is the private partner responsible for the construction, which began on December 5, 2015. The port is India's first dedicated container transshipment port, marking a milestone in the country’s maritime development.
Vizhinjam Port is strategically located near one of the busiest sea trade routes in the world. The port’s natural deep draft of nearly 20 meters makes it ideal for handling large vessels.
The project is a key element in India’s efforts to strengthen its position in global trade and enhance logistics efficiency. The seaport aims to reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports for cargo transshipment.
Kerala Ports Minister VN Vasavan addressed the media on the eve of the commissioning ceremony.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by various state ministers and dignitaries, highlighting the project's importance.
