The Congress on Thursday attacked the Centre after its announcement of the decision to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the "master of giving a headline without a deadline".

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh demanded that the census should be done as soon as possible and that there should be a Constitutional Amendment and the 50 per cent cap on reservations be removed.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also urged for fixing of a time limit for the caste enumeration and allocation of sufficient funds.

Urging the Centre to fulfill the announcement made, Kharge said, as of today the government has not allocated sufficient money for it.

"They should also give a time limit. If the time limit is not there, it will take a long time." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also welcomed the government's "sudden" decision to carry out caste enumeration after "11 years of opposing it".
