Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the site on Tuesday for inspection
The Panvel Terminus project received a boost as work on the remodelling of its yards has been expedited, with a final deadline set for December 2026. The terminus work has been combined with that of the Kalamboli yard, which will create more space for train operations. This will not only enhance the station's capacity but also enable trains to originate from there.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the site on Tuesday and conducted a detailed inspection and review of the ongoing yard remodelling work. During his visit, the minister announced that Panvel station will be developed into a terminal station for long-distance trains, marking a significant step forward in the strategic enhancement of rail infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
"The yard remodelling project is currently underway to significantly upgrade the station's operational capacity. The project involves the construction of new lines and the comprehensive reorganisation of the existing yard layout to support improved train handling and facilitate seamless integration with the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The development of Panvel as a terminal for long-distance trains is poised to reduce congestion at existing Mumbai terminals and provide greater connectivity to passengers in the growing Panvel region," an official spokesperson said.
The new Panvel Terminus project includes the construction of an island platform capable of accommodating 26-coach trains, a home platform, and a circulating area for passengers. It also involves the building of a foot overbridge and a new 1500 sqm station building with supporting facilities.

Additionally, the new Kalamboli maintenance hub will have four washing-cum-pit lines, two stabling lines for 26-coach trains, and entry-cum-exit lines for similar trains, along with a 130-metre by 10-metre maintenance shed. The Panvel Terminus and the Kalamboli coaching complex will be connected by a separate third line with appropriate links on both ends, ensuring it does not interfere with existing operational traffic.
Poor facilities at Panvel station
"The station's approach road is often chaotic, with auto-rickshaws causing bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. This makes it hard for private vehicle users and pedestrians, with some paying high fares (Rs 200-500) for short trips," said Manish N Koparkar of Navi Mumbai Pravasi Sangh. The station also lacks basic amenities like adequate seating and clear train announcements, with unhygienic surroundings and poor road conditions adding to the discomfort," Koparkar said. In addition to this, senior citizens and differently abled passengers struggle due to insufficient support for luggage and mobility," Koparkar added.
