The police on Saturday said that unidentified persons strangled a woman and dumped her body on the roadside in Maharashtra's Thane district, reported news agency PTI.
The woman, in her early to mid-30s, was found dead in the Thakurgaon area of Bhiwandi on Friday, an official said.
He said the deceased woman's identity is yet to be established.
After preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had died of strangulation, a case of murder was registered at Kongaon police station, he said, reported PTI.

The official said the body has been sent for post-mortem, and efforts are underway to identify the victim.
In another incident, three persons have been booked for allegedly trying to kill a 23-year-old woman in Bhiwandi in Thane district, a police official said on Friday.
The three, including two women and a man, are related to the victim, he added, reported PTI.
"The accused tried to kill her by forcing washing liquid into her mouth following an argument in her house. An FIR was registered on April 14. No one has been arrested so far," he added.
A 22-year-old inmate of a prison fell ill and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Saturday, reported PTI.
The inmate lodged at Adharwadi Jail in Kalyan died at a government-run hospital on April 15, an official said.
He said Sukhua Dudraj Ravidas, a native of Jharkhand, vomited blood in his cell and was rushed to Ulhasnagar Central Hospital late at night on April 14, and he died within hours, reported PTI.
The body has been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, and a case of accidental death was registered, reported PTI.
The local police are probing into the death, the official said.
The police have not specified the crime Ravidas was convicted of.
