Amartya Bobo Rahut, has composed music for independent albums like On the fusion band with Amit Trivedi and Shriram Iyer, Yaadon Ke Idiot Box with Shilpa Rao and Neelesh Misra. He has also worked on independent movies like Darbaan, Tu Hai Mera Sunday, and the National award winning Uttarayan, besides movies like Aurangzeb, Tumhari Sulu, Drive and more. The music composer speaks to mid-day.com about his latest track âThikana' and more.
How did your latest track âThikana' come to life?
âThikana' is a powerful and gritty rock ballad that infuses some elements of Indian classical music merged with a contemporary groove. It is one of my favourite songs and this is sort of an experiment that I always wanted to do. This song has an animated video which has given it a very twist. This comes as a change on genre for me after my previous love song âKaisi Ho?'I feel it is a song for very selective kind of music lovers.

Making music for a Bollywood film is very different from Indie music. In Bollywood films we need to consider the director's vision and look after the commercial aspect. Business plays a very important role in case of films. Whereas in Indie music it is completely the choice of the artist and his journey. Indie music gives an artist the freedom to work on his own music.
How has the pandemic changed your approach towards your work in music ?
Well the pandemic I am sure has changed a lot of people's approach towards their careers I feel, Indie music is the way forward, where movie makers will slowly start licensing and acquiring songs from independent artists. Music was the only non-stop thing during pandemic which kept moving. So many artistes got an opportunity to work on their own music during this time. Many of them have also launched their own label post the pandemic lockdown.
Upcoming projects?
I have three more songs that I will be releasing in 2021 independently through my label. There are a few OTT projects too but cant reveal much about it.
How important is social media for an artiste?
Social media is a fantastic tool for promoting one's own craft and making it reach people without being dependant on the standard industry system, which probably 10 years ago wasn't possible at all. So I feel it's great for emerging artists.
