Bringing a superstar alive on the big screen is no easy feat - and when the star in question is Mohanlal, the challenge becomes even steeper. A towering figure in Malayalam cinema for over four decades, Mohanlal has explored virtually every genre and played every conceivable character. Capturing that legendary aura requires a director with both vision and restraint.

With Thudarum, Tharun Murthy rises to the occasion. For the legion of Lalettan fans yearning to see the actor's iconic stardom celebrated in all its glory, this film delivers - and then some.

Mohanlal's homecoming

Mohanlal plays Shanmughan, affectionately nicknamed "Benz" for his lifelong obsession with cars - especially his beloved Mark 1 vintage black Ambassador, a gift from his former stunt master. Once a stunt body double, Shanmughan now leads a quiet life in a small Kerala village with his wife Lalitha (played by Shobana) and their children. But peace proves fleeting when his trusted mechanic is caught with contraband, dragging Benz into a confrontation with the local police and setting off a chain of turbulent events.

For fans who felt that Mohanlal's star wattage was dimmed a little with films that did not do justice to his stardom, Thudarum will feel like a homecoming. From the first frame, Mohanlal commands the screen with effortless charm, gravitas, and emotional depth. Clocking in at nearly three hours, the film moves briskly, showcasing the full spectrum of Mohanlal - the mass hero, the emotional performer, the nuanced craftsman.

Director Tharun Moorthy, known for his acclaimed works 'Operation Java' and 'Saudi Vellakka', crafts a story that, while predictable at times, never feels tedious. The screenplay is tight, the dialogues are sharp without veering into melodrama, and the mass moments are balanced with emotional authenticity. The first half might seem a bit long but it is worth it as you will be able to better connect with the characters emotionally in the second half.

Music is another standout element. Jakes Bejoy's score elevates pivotal scenes, helping the film transition seamlessly from its light-hearted first half to the darker, more intense second half. The action sequences - especially considering the 64-year-old lead - are organically woven into the narrative, avoiding the gimmickry that plagues many star vehicles. The stunt sequences will have you up and cheering for the star and clap as he delivers some punchy lines.

Performances

One of the film's great pleasures is witnessing the reunion of Mohanlal and Shobana - their 56th collaboration. Shobana brings quiet strength and grace to Lalitha, matching Mohanlal's energy frame for frame. However, the second half sidelines her character slightly, as the plot pivots fully towards Benz's quest for redemption and revenge.

Ad filmmaker Prakash Varma makes a solid acting debut as George Sir, delivering a performance that is both convincing, memorable and bound to make an impact. Mohanlal delivers his range as an actor as he effortlessly moves from a jovial proud man to one who is seeped in anger for revenge.

There are also some pleasant cameos by Sangeeth Prathap and Arjun Ashokan.

Final Verdict

Thudarum is not just another star-driven project - it's a celebration of everything that makes Mohanlal a legend. For fans, this is the theatrical experience they have been craving. And for general audiences, it's a reminder of the rare magic that occurs when a great actor is given the right canvas.
