Stree (2018, Hindi)

The film is not primarily centered around motherhood, but is a horror comedy by genre. It delves into themes of lost motherhood and gendered violence. The ghost of a woman who was wronged haunts a town, and the one who comes in her search is her daughter

Tumbbad (2018, Hindi/Marathi)

Although it is more mythological horror than pure motherhood drama, Tumbbad uses the concept of a cursed mother (Goddess of Greed) and her children metaphorically for human greed and generational consequences. It is considered one of the best films in the genre, mixing Indian folklore with horror elements

Hello Mummy (2024, Malayalam)

A dead mother refuses to stop haunting her house where her husband and daughter live. The ghost mother still haunts the house and controls the life of her daughter. The film is billed as a horror comedy with the daughter's husband coming to live with her in the haunted house as a house husband

Lapachhapi (2016, Marathi)

A pregnant woman moves to a remote village where she faces supernatural forces. The movie explores the theme of motherhood amidst rural superstitions and horrifying rituals and the women battling all forces to protect her unborn child

Ezra (2017, Malayalam)

This supernatural thriller involves a Jewish spirit and a tragic story about a mother who lost her child, ultimately leading to paranormal disturbances. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Priya Anand, Tovino Thomas, Sujith Shankar, Vijayaraghavan and Sudev Nair in the leading roles. The film was inspired by Hollywood horror film The Possession 

Bhoothakaalam (2022, Malayalam)

Following the death of a family member, a mother and son experience mysterious events which distort their sense of reality and make them question their sanity. The film marks the debut of Rahul Sadasivan who also co-wrote the film with Sreekumar Shreyas. The film stars Shane Nigam, Revathi and Saiju Kurup

Mom (2017, Hindi)

Devki, a biology teacher, seeks help from DK, a private detective, and vows to get revenge after her stepdaughter's rapists are acquitted by the court. This was one of Sridvei's most power-packed performances and will get the audience to feel all her emotions

Ghost Stories (2020, Hindi) 

The segment directed by Anurag Kashyap follows Sameera (played by Sobhita Dhulipala), a young woman working as a caretaker for an old bedridden woman in a crumbling house. Sameera is dealing with her own emotional trauma — she recently had an abortion and feels deeply unsettled. As she cares for the old woman, strange events unfold. Sameera starts to experience hallucinations and disturbing visions — she sees a small boy around the house and hears unsettling sounds. The boundary between her reality, guilt, and imagination begins to blur

Chhorii (2021, Hindi)

A Hindi remake of Lapachhapi. It delves deeply into the horrors faced by a pregnant woman and critiques social evils like female infanticide. The second part of the film sees the protagonist rescuing her seven-year-old daughter from a superstitious cult while fighting societal injustices and the horror that continues to haunt her and young women around her

Kumari (2022, Malayalam)

Kumari (played by Aishwarya Lekshmi), moves to her husband’s ancestral home where ancient traditions and dark secrets control people's lives. When Kumari becomes pregnant, she soon realizes that her child is destined to be sacrificed to uphold a supernatural pact that ensures prosperity for the family and the village. This encourages Kumari to become a fiercely protective mother who defies superstitions, traditions, and even demonic forces to save her unborn child
